Etymology

Turkic (Saybek): Many scholars, including Turkish musicologist Onur Akdoğu, suggest it derives from the Old Turkic word saybek, meaning "valiant lord" or "strong guardian".Turkic (Sübek): Another linguistic theory links it to sü (meaning "army" or "soldiers") and bek (meaning "lord" or "bey"). Byzantine/Historical Figure: Historian Paul Wittek proposed that the word evolved from "Salpakis Mantachias," a Greek name used by Byzantine historians to describe 13th-century Anatolian ruler Menteşe Bey. paganic : zeus + bekos (phyrgian thracian word for bread) or greek : ibakkhos (zeybek)
