Definition

The hero of giant strength who, still bound to the older age, tried to seize the Delphic tripod and divert it elsewhere — but yielded before the power of the divine light. Emblem of mortal might overmatched by the solar order.

Etymology

Greek Herakles — 'glory of Hera,' from Hera + kleos (glory).
