Definition

The father-god and sky-father who marked Delphi as the center of the world by releasing two swans from the ends of the earth. Father of Apollo and Dionysus, wielder of the lightning, source of the fertilizing ray that begets the divine son.

Etymology

Greek Zeus, from Proto-Indo-European dyeus — 'sky, day, the shining one.'
