The chthonic dragon set by the powers of the deep as warden of Delphi before Apollo. Slain by the god of light and dissolved into fertile earth, Python marks the conquest of the underworld voice by the solar Logos.
Greek Python, linked to Pytho (Delphi) and pythein, 'to rot' — the serpent left to decay in the sun.
