Daimon

also known as daemon, daemons, daimones

Definition

An intermediary spirit standing between gods and mortals — neither wholly divine nor human. At Delphi the chthonic daimones spoke through the early priestesses; the 'daemon of Saturn' names the adversary of the light. Not the later demon of evil, but a daemon of intelligence and fate.

Etymology

Greek daimon — 'divider, allotter' of destinies, from daiomai, 'to divide.'
